Based in Ulverston, Cumbria, Conservation Chemicals Consultants came to us with a WooCommerce site that was struggling. Not because it was complex or over-engineered, it was simply built on shaky foundations.
Their existing hosting with GoDaddy was unreliable and the site went down frequently. When it was online, performance issues made it slow and frustrating for customers trying to find products.
We didn't just patch it. We started again with a new WooCommerce build, moved them to reliable hosting, and added the product discovery tools they actually needed.
This is the type of work we regularly deliver through our web design Cumbria services, where performance, reliability and usability come first.
Their existing WooCommerce setup had accumulated several issues over time:
The hosting was the main blocker. Shared hosting environments often struggle under WooCommerce workloads and in this case it resulted in outages and inconsistent availability.
On top of that, the database had become noisy with spam customer accounts, making it harder to manage real orders and customers effectively.
At a certain point, continuing to fix individual problems becomes less effective than addressing the underlying cause.
Working closely with the Ulverston-based company, we started again with a completely new WooCommerce build while carefully migrating across the data that mattered.
We moved them away from GoDaddy to Guru - effective WordPress hosting designed specifically for WooCommerce. This immediately resolved the stability and downtime issues.
We migrated their full order history and customer data from the old system, rebuilding what was needed while cleaning the database in the process. This included removing spam customer registrations so the new store started clean, accurate, and reliable.
We then built a fresh WooCommerce site from the ground up with a clean configuration, improved caching, and a properly structured setup designed for performance and growth.
One of the biggest usability challenges was product discovery.
Not every customer arrives at a website in the same way.
Some visitors know exactly what they're looking for. They know the product name, product code, or the type of chemical they need.
Others know the problem they're trying to solve but aren't familiar with the product range.
To support both types of users, we introduced a dual approach to product discovery:
This ensured that experienced buyers could find products quickly while new customers could confidently navigate the range without frustration.
It's a simple concept, but one that can have a significant impact on usability and conversion rates.
A website shouldn't be a black box.
Alongside the rebuild, we integrated Google Site Kit and Microsoft Clarity so Conservation Chemicals can see exactly how their website is performing.
Google Site Kit brings key metrics directly into WordPress, making it easy to track traffic, search performance and visitor trends without logging into multiple platforms.
Microsoft Clarity provides behavioural insights such as heatmaps and session recordings, helping identify how users interact with the site and where opportunities for improvement exist.
To keep things simple, they also receive straightforward weekly email summaries containing key website statistics and trends.
No jargon. No complicated dashboards. Just clear information that helps them understand how their website is performing.
Traffic spikes no longer cause problems and the website now supports the business rather than holding it back.
At Freshspace, we help businesses across Cumbria and beyond build, improve, and support websites that deliver real results. We believe good web design isn't about adding more complexity. It's about creating reliable, user-friendly websites that help businesses achieve their goals.
This project highlights something we see regularly with businesses across Cumbria and beyond: you can't build a reliable website on an unstable foundation.
Sometimes the best solution isn't another plugin, another workaround, or another AI quick fix.
Sometimes the right decision is to start again properly.
For Conservation Chemicals, that meant moving away from unreliable hosting, cleaning and migrating their data correctly, rebuilding WooCommerce from the ground up and creating a product discovery experience that works for different types of customers.
The finished website isn't revolutionary.
It simply does what it needs to do.
It's fast, reliable, easy to use and built to support future growth.
That's exactly what good web design should deliver.
