The Challenge

When we first met with David Whitson he was running an already very successful family business with his wife Hannah and other family members, located near Caldbeck, Cumbria. Deeply set within the Cumbrian farming community the Whitson's had a large network of local customers as well as those from further afield. There were many strands to the business including agricultural engineering, agricultural/vehicle parts and supplies, supplying Fertiliser and finally extending out to farm-based toys.

With some limited success on Ebay and Amazon, some struggle to align their Facebook page and limited success with their online store they felt it was time to untangle what they were doing and take a fresh approach. They also felt as part of the wider picture they wanted to bring the business together under one distinct brand and banner which is D W Whitson Ltd, then start utilising digital marketing and social media to support further growth of their business.

Our Solution

Our first step was supporting them in adopting the brand D W Whitson Ltd for all strands of the business. We put in place a holding page to support their online presence and therefore, natural search rankings in time for the full site going live. Additionally as there main digital reach was through their multiple Facebook pages, we liaised with Facebook on their behalf and brought all into one business page. This allowed David and Hannah to continue successfully marketing their products online as the site was built in the background.

We then worked closely with David and Hannah to build a site which was clean, professional and also a little fun. Using WordPress, an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and user friendly Content Management System, we integrated WooCommerce with the site to build a fully customisable and functional online shop. We carefully split the site into the various strands of the business so the array of services under D W Whitson Ltd were clearly displayed. It was agreed that to begin with we'd test the site with a range of skeleton products and build accordingly.

With so many high-quality suppliers, we made sure logos were presented accordingly to support D W Whitson Ltd’s credentials as a trustworthy supplier. Many of D W Whitson Ltd’s custom is based on good reputation and long-standing relationships. We felt it was important that this came across on the website and designed it so as to capture some of the personality behind the business.

With some reticence towards email marketing, we started small with a standard GDPR email… which resulted in some machinery sales! This lit the fire and we have since ran a seasonal email marketing campaign to boost key products. Altogether the continued following and interaction on Facebook, coupled with a professional website and digital marketing, the David and Hannah are able to continue to grow their business online as the roots continue to be firmly placed in what is a personable, highly respected service.
