The Pie Mill
The Pie Mill already had the ability to sell online but with an e-commerce site which had become unpredictable, online orders were becoming less frequent. As a traditional family business based in the Lake District, Cumbria, who also sell nationally and to trade, it was important that the balance was struck cleanly through a new website.
A website which maintained their traditional feel and enabled them to continue selling effectively was crucial. Any online shop needed to be configured to their specific needs in selling and transporting fresh produce. With a limited online presence The Pie Mill also wanted to build upon this in order to further push the business out into the online market.
We worked with Amanda to get a real feel for the business and what matters most to them. We wanted to provide them with an updated design but in doing so had to take into consideration the traditional nature of The Pie Mill. With this in mind we adapted a design around their branding and personality, to offer something clean and local, fitting perfectly with The Pie Mill. As a Cumbrian family business it felt important that we produced more than an online shop, but a website which also tells the story of the people behind the business. With widespread appreciation for their pies we built the site so as to give a nod to both their suppliers and trade customers, highlighting the success but also locality of the business.
In building the online shop we adopted the WordPress plugin WooCommerce which supported us in providing a store which fits perfectly within the website as a whole. With the products available all being made with fresh ingredients, the terms of delivery could become a concern if it were not configured carefully. WooCommerce allowed us to put a minimum quantity on delivery and offer an adaptable system which can fit with changing requirements of the business.
As a result The Pie Mill have received an increase in the number of orders already and have the confidence that they are not missing out on online custom. This is accompanied by more active engagement on social media. In a short space of time they have proven that a traditional Cumbrian business really can compete in an online marketplace.
